Core 6G Features – The 2030 Vision & 5GC Evolution

Core 6G Features – The 2030 Vision & 5GC Evolution
(Cloud-Native 5GC, 5G-Advanced, Operations)

6G Status as of April 2026
3GPP has officially started 6G work:

  • Rel-20 (2025–2027): Study phase (technical requirements, candidate radio interfaces, core architecture studies).
  • Rel-21 (2028–2029+): First normative 6G specifications (target freeze ~2029).
  • Commercial 6G rollout expected ~2030.

Key principle: 6G is evolutionary, not revolutionary. The 5G Core Service-Based Architecture (SBA) remains the foundation. The 6G Core will reuse and enhance existing 5GC network functions (AMF, SMF, UPF, NWDAF, PCF, etc.) with new native capabilities rather than a clean-sheet redesign. Emphasis is on AI-native intelligence, sustainability, computing integration, and seamless multi-access (terrestrial + NTN).

This 45–60 minute module (lecture + table + 20-minute workshop) slots into Day 5 morning, immediately after the Rel-18 vs Rel-19 comparison. It gives participants a clear forward-looking view to include in their capstone 5GC blueprint (e.g., “6G-ready migration path”).

Sources (April 2026): 3GPP Rel-20/21 study items (SA2, SA5, RAN), Ericsson, Qualcomm, Nokia, Spirent, and 5G Americas reports. 6G will meet ITU-R IMT-2030 requirements (higher data rates, spectral efficiency, sustainability, sensing, differentiated connectivity).

Why These Features Matter for 5G Core Professionals Today

  • Investment protection: Deploying 5G SA + cloud-native 5GC today is the best preparation for 6G.
  • New monetization: ISAC, AIaaS, and native NTN open entirely new B2B revenue streams beyond connectivity.
  • Architectural continuity: Most 5GC functions survive; the biggest changes are native intelligence and integration (AI, sensing, compute, NTN).
  • Timeline reality: 2026–2027 is the critical window to influence 6G studies and plan 5GC upgrades.
